Freight Bar Hotel Ballarat- Corner Mair and Peel Street

Very tasty  local bar well worth checking out. We paid a visit one night when we couldn’t be bothered cooking, and were not disappointed at all. prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is great!

The staff were chatty, wonderful people too, and its a beautifully refurbished bar (opened in 2013 by Chris Sergent), with multiple levels, cozy gas log fires, and a beer garden, as well as craft beers and an attachment to a house brewery next door- the athletic club brewery co.

Since opening in 2013, the 535m2 site and building of freight bar was sold to new owners for a cool $1.7 million on an inital gross yield of 10.43% ($3150.00/week) in July 2015, reaping a staggering 100% profit (less substantial refurbishment costs) on the 850K price paid less than 3 years beforehand in 2012.

Anyway enough commercial property market trivia!; down to the food- The $20 bar snack plate was delicious!WP_20170624_19_32_04_Pro
4X BBQ sumptuous BBQ ribs, Chinese 5 spiced duck breast, and house made sausage rolls with spicy dipping sauce. Head Chef Chris Watt has certainly excelled himself.

We also ordered a bowl of sweet potato fries for a measly $5 which were a fantastic addition to round off the meal to be a very satisfying light dinner for two!

They were all excellent, but next time we might replace the sausage rolls with another helping of the amazingly tasty ribs, or the Salt and Szechuan Pepper Pork Belly with kaffir lime caramel; which was highly reccommended by some other other punters at the bar we spoke to before makign our selection. (yes, we harassed another friendly looking couple who had already ordered, who sang nothing but praise)

I love burgers and kebabs Wendouree howitt street ballarat

WP_20170510_18_29_04_ProOver the last couple months, I’ve noticed a food cart parked outside premix king and shepp cannery surplus, near NQR clearance stores on Howitt street, in the Wendouree CBD.
Bright blue fairy lights adorn a plain white boxish food van, shining alluringly in the night. Painted quite simply on the back of the van is some stylised burgers, kebabs and love hearts.

Mmmmm burgers.. Kebabs
. And oh yes I love them!!
It seemed a bit gimmicky at first, parked outside a late night liquor store, in a lonely car park, so I never investigated… Just drive on by. This, I’d learn, was a big mistake!!

Earlier this week, I and the lass stopped by in Wendouree shopping strip to quickly pick something up. It was a fresh night, pleasantly frosty, so we went for a wander, determined to undo whatever meager exercise we had undertaken with a good dose of comforting takeout.

Looking at the menu, the prices were reasonably cheap, the van was very clean and certainly not the usual disturbingly insanitary state food vans often can be… especially those serving kebabs!

We picked out a HSP – Halal Snack Pack. with two meats- chicken and Lamb.WP_20170510_18_40_41_Pro

As per usual, we devoured half that delicious Ballarat HSP before getting aroudn to takign a photo of it, in all its pristine three sauced splendour- there was a choice, but we went with traditional- Garlic, BBQ and chilli.

The size was particularly generous- more than enough for two, and served nice and piping hot!

The surprise was that in addition to delicious meats, the chips beneath were exceptionally golden and crispy. well above average, and probably the best take away chips in Ballarat, even rivaling the golden gems served up by the round the way bagel burger cafe.

WP_20170510_18_28_49_ProThe staff were really friendly, enthusiastic young people too- their cute little daughter can be seen helping her mum make burgers just over the counter, which is indescribably adorable.

Their burger menu looks crazily delicious too, with double crumbed fried chicken, “bird is the word”, meat lovers, and even a vegetarian burger creation featuring Haloumi cheese, eggplant and grilled spinach and pumpkin. I’m looking forward to coming back!

check out their facebook page- it has a lot more fantastic photos of their delicious burgers!

Round the Way Bagels and burgers Ballarat

WP_20160320_14_11_06_ProRound the way is one of my favourite, most loved establishments in the beautiful city of Ballarat, and possibly holds the crown of being the second eatery I visited in this fair town.
The unassuming name, “Round the way” doesn’t really give up much in it’s title initially….. the only hint that you can see in hindsight is the promise of big, round bagels.. as is indicated by the pile of the things on display in the front window. (YES! that’s a lot of bagels out there!- no false advertising in this place- what you see on display is truly what is on offer!

This  serves up particularly special, and addictive, absolutely delicious bagel burgers in a vaguely american WP_20160320_14_19_59_Prorockabilly cafe atmosphere.

Apparently, it also has a roving food truck / van thing that attends various events around Ballarat, all the way down to the surf coast, and for private catering such as weddings and corporate functions.- sadly, I have never caught sight of it yet, but that might be just an indidcation that i need to get a life and get out more.

The burgers are big, juicy and saucy, just the way any sane person likes them… and come with a few pretzels on the side for some reason. (Not that i’m complaining!)

The coffee is pretty good too- thankfully, despite the american diner atmosphere, they seem to have dispensed with the nasty dripolator coffee pot, (which is really only suitable for hard boiled american police with anger, substance abuse and family issues)- There’s a familiar espresso machine instead- not everything needs to be authentic!

Another thing to be sureWP_20160320_14_19_54_Pro not to miss is the sides. beautifully arranged appetisingly presented, and almost more
special than the main event, the massive, awesome burgers, are the crispy golden wedges, and potato salad, plus something else that was super tasty that I have forgotten the identity of.

Great value too- I think the trio of sides was around $12. The burger was pricey, but definitely worth it for a treat, or a cute lunchdate with the lass, which is what i did on this occasion. The burger + sides shared and coffee each was enough to satisfy one hungry man, and one small girl. I think our bill was round $35.
