Freight Bar Hotel Ballarat- Corner Mair and Peel Street

Very tasty  local bar well worth checking out. We paid a visit one night when we couldn’t be bothered cooking, and were not disappointed at all. prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is great!

The staff were chatty, wonderful people too, and its a beautifully refurbished bar (opened in 2013 by Chris Sergent), with multiple levels, cozy gas log fires, and a beer garden, as well as craft beers and an attachment to a house brewery next door- the athletic club brewery co.

Since opening in 2013, the 535m2 site and building of freight bar was sold to new owners for a cool $1.7 million on an inital gross yield of 10.43% ($3150.00/week) in July 2015, reaping a staggering 100% profit (less substantial refurbishment costs) on the 850K price paid less than 3 years beforehand in 2012.

Anyway enough commercial property market trivia!; down to the food- The $20 bar snack plate was delicious!WP_20170624_19_32_04_Pro
4X BBQ sumptuous BBQ ribs, Chinese 5 spiced duck breast, and house made sausage rolls with spicy dipping sauce. Head Chef Chris Watt has certainly excelled himself.

We also ordered a bowl of sweet potato fries for a measly $5 which were a fantastic addition to round off the meal to be a very satisfying light dinner for two!

They were all excellent, but next time we might replace the sausage rolls with another helping of the amazingly tasty ribs, or the Salt and Szechuan Pepper Pork Belly with kaffir lime caramel; which was highly reccommended by some other other punters at the bar we spoke to before makign our selection. (yes, we harassed another friendly looking couple who had already ordered, who sang nothing but praise)

I love burgers and kebabs Wendouree howitt street ballarat

WP_20170510_18_29_04_ProOver the last couple months, I’ve noticed a food cart parked outside premix king and shepp cannery surplus, near NQR clearance stores on Howitt street, in the Wendouree CBD.
Bright blue fairy lights adorn a plain white boxish food van, shining alluringly in the night. Painted quite simply on the back of the van is some stylised burgers, kebabs and love hearts.

Mmmmm burgers.. Kebabs
. And oh yes I love them!!
It seemed a bit gimmicky at first, parked outside a late night liquor store, in a lonely car park, so I never investigated… Just drive on by. This, I’d learn, was a big mistake!!

Earlier this week, I and the lass stopped by in Wendouree shopping strip to quickly pick something up. It was a fresh night, pleasantly frosty, so we went for a wander, determined to undo whatever meager exercise we had undertaken with a good dose of comforting takeout.

Looking at the menu, the prices were reasonably cheap, the van was very clean and certainly not the usual disturbingly insanitary state food vans often can be… especially those serving kebabs!

We picked out a HSP – Halal Snack Pack. with two meats- chicken and Lamb.WP_20170510_18_40_41_Pro

As per usual, we devoured half that delicious Ballarat HSP before getting aroudn to takign a photo of it, in all its pristine three sauced splendour- there was a choice, but we went with traditional- Garlic, BBQ and chilli.

The size was particularly generous- more than enough for two, and served nice and piping hot!

The surprise was that in addition to delicious meats, the chips beneath were exceptionally golden and crispy. well above average, and probably the best take away chips in Ballarat, even rivaling the golden gems served up by the round the way bagel burger cafe.

WP_20170510_18_28_49_ProThe staff were really friendly, enthusiastic young people too- their cute little daughter can be seen helping her mum make burgers just over the counter, which is indescribably adorable.

Their burger menu looks crazily delicious too, with double crumbed fried chicken, “bird is the word”, meat lovers, and even a vegetarian burger creation featuring Haloumi cheese, eggplant and grilled spinach and pumpkin. I’m looking forward to coming back!

check out their facebook page- it has a lot more fantastic photos of their delicious burgers!

Tasty Kebab Stop Mair street Ballarat – Late night takeaway

WP_20170412_20_09_34_ProThese new boys on the block originally come from sunshine.

With an eye for business, and a good understanding of the food drunk, busy and hungry rattians want, they set up a permanent van at 27 Mair Street North Ballarat Central.

Since I came to Ballarat, I wondered when somebody would fill this obvious niche need, and, after a false start occurring sig months ago when the owners of Sebastian cafe had a go in their back courtyard,  its finally happened in a more permanent capacity.

Allegedly open till 2am nightly, this kebab stop proffers what has been missing in ballarat for a long time- hot, greasy late night food, and the best iteration of that category is the classic kebab! Not to mention, the new crase, the legendary Halal snack pack- a mix of chips, meats and sauces!

The proprietors, while numerous in number are a happy, chatty bunch and pretty friendly towards their new customers. They guys in the van said that business had been strong from the word go, and while I was there, quite a few people came by to sample the greasy goodness.

The van is also set up in such a way that you can pretty much see exactly what is going on in the kitchen, which for any kebab consumer, is a really important thing to have pace for mind over for obvious reasons!WP_20170412_20_09_48_Pro

I picked the HSP – Halal Snack Pack, which i suspect is the only HSP for sale in Ballarat at present. Mmm. chips, sauce, meat!!!

The price wasn’t that cheap, at $13, nor was it absolutely huge, but it was a good size, and enough for two of us quite easily. (prices are in the image to the right)

WP_20170412_20_21_33_ProSadly, i took a photo of it after we had wolfed down a considerable portion of its contents. It looked a fair bit better before we started demolishing it.

The guys were good enough to give me mixed meat, half chicken, half lamb, separated down the middle, with a choice of a good number of sauces, of which I went the classic garlic and BBQ.

Pretty tasty, though I have to say that the chicken meat was substantially better than the Lamb, which was just ok in comparison. I’d go with just the pure chicken option next time.

Kebab man down in Sebastapol does much better lamb kebab, but it’s not as convenient as the van in Mair street!

It came out a bit colder then I would have liked, but it may have cooled down substantially on the drive home.. and it was a very chilly evening. I think i’d go back here, especially since I did not get ill from the experience, which is always g positive sign when dealing with kebab like late night foods.

The phone number below looks useful for pre-ordering your food before driving or walking down, though I have not used it myself.
