iinet cable broadband speed test 100Mbps+ download- the fastest internet in Ballarat, Victoria, or even Australia for homes! Better than NBN!

Question- How fast is iiNet cable broadband, delivered over the old neighborhood cable pay tv coaxial cable network in Ballarat, Mildura and Geelong?

Answer: You wouldn’t believe how damn fast and good this service is! We tested it out in Ballarat, and it definitely more than delivers on the marketing hype on TV and the billboard scattered around town! In fact, the “80-100Mbps” marketing claim is absolute RUBBISH. In reality, it’s up to 300% BETTER.

Now, that’s not something that can be said lightly, but the evidence on how good it is is quite compelling.

Not only that, but its CHEAP, especially for what you get. (they currently have a special on, for 12 the first months at $40/month with a free netphone, modem, and $70 installation)

We reviewed the service through conducting independent tests of our own, and iinet cable broadband in Ballarat delivers surprisingly,  rocketfast speeds of up to 330 Mbit downloads and around 5ombit uploads.

iiNet Cable Ballarat Speed test results verdict:

Downloads: 150 Mbps to 330 Mbps

Uploads: 40 Mbps – 50 Mbps

Ping / Latency: 9ms – 49ms

Effective file download capability of a massive 100GB per hour!

In brief, we tested the Victorian cable broadband on a number of independent internet speed testing sites recommended by the famous Australian internet and tech forum whirlpool

iiNet cable broadband consistently blew the expensive NBN service out of the water on every test we tried out.

Eventually the tests got boring. We got the picture. Cable broadband in Ballarat is probably the fastest and best value residential internet in Victoria, perhaps Australia.

For the gamers, though the connection is not absolutely stable, the ping values seen in our tests are excellent, and will deliver a premium gaming experience.

Even at full price, at $80/month…. the quality of the service seems worth it. Why would you want to pay $60-$70 a month for woefully average, unstable and unreliable NBN, when for just a few dollars more, you can have the best?

iiNet Cable internet Ballarat speed test results in detail:

Test Setup: wired CAT-5 Ethernet connection over a 5m cable directly to a Technicolor Cable Gateway Pro Model EPC3940L, which is standard equipment supplied by iiNet.  (Results on a wireless Connection will naturally be much poorer)

First test: Google internet speed test. (just type in “internet speed test” into your browser, and a button will appear in the search results that connects you to the Measurement Lab service

We did the speed test again, directly through the Mlab site a couple hours later, and the results were fairly comparable.

Using the independent service https://speedof.me/

This returned an excellent, but less impressive result of 157.25 Mbps download on the first try, but subsequent tests returned in excess of  an eye popping 320 Mbps !

Next, we tried out good old telstra’s website to test out their competition. Even using a Perth server location, iinet’s Ballarat cable delivered in excess of 300 Mbps download speeds!

Pitching the speed of cable against the Exetel online speed test engine, our cable again burned away at ridiculous speed to log a 300 Mbps download speed, with 50 Mb/ps uploads.

Exetel’s speed test also had some more juicy information which told us what the speed measure actually meant in real download performance.

As you can see below, download transfers really moved along the line at 37Mb per second, and uploads at 6.4Mb per second.

meaning, that on iinet’s cable broadband in Ballarat, you cloud theoretically download over 133GB in a single hour, and upload 22Gb of movies to Utube.

Last of all, we put the connection up against https://testmy.net/

Again, insane internet speed, way better than the crippled, expensive and unreliable NBN could ever hope to deliver.

The only disturbing result form tessymy.net was that the test we conducted appeared to be a severe outlier for all iinet tests conducted by them to date.

That said, we are not comparing apples with apples here- most of the iinet tests on this site were probably done with NBN or ADSL plans, which would have no hope of competing with the sheer raw excellence that cable can deliver in our town.

It’s great to see that Ballarat has one amazing service that is far superior to what can be obtained in Melbourne!

I think that’s more than enough speed tests for one day now.

You get the idea. Those ratty old coaxial cables which hang from the power poles around downtown Ballarat are quite a surprising little gem, and we are lucky to have access to them.

Here in Ballarat, we can obtain internet speeds that most people in the Australia can only dream about, (100-350 mbps ) and its only $40 a month at the moment for limitless, unmetered internet.

A piece of advice-

Get onto this discounted deal before iiNet discontinues it.

Its fantastic value 🙂

Nokia Lumia Windows Device recovery tool Microsoft official download location

If your Nokia Lumia phone, including Nokia 830 and 930 have stopped working properly after a windows 10 mobile update, you will need the Windows Device recover tool from Microsoft to roll back the operating windows 10 mobile operating system back to windows 8.1.

In Australia, on the Nokia 930 the Telstra branded update can break, resulting in microsoft edge not being installed, and you being unable to sign into your microsoft account login.

The store will also be broken, because without being able to log in, you cannot install edge again, but on a cruel catch 22, you cannot log in witout installing the correct app… which require a successful Microsoft account login.

Anyhow, the official Microsoft download link to the Microsoft device recovery tool for Nokia Lumia phones can be found below:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12379/windows-10-mobile-device-recovery-tool-faq

The link is just to a package installer, of 2.3Mb. An obnoxious and convoluted download process may begin after installation of the initial installer from Microsoft.

annnnnd.. an error 0x00000067 (thor2NotResponding) is thrown on my Nokia Lumia 930

windows_recovery_tool_nokia_lumia_error0x00000067(Thor2NotResponding)

eventually, after some trial and error, and at the prompt, hitting power + volume down till the phone vibrated the following screen pops up, offering a download of a suitable windows mobile OS version from the server.

Upon clicking “install software, Microsoft asks you why you are ditching windows 10- performance issues, apps nor working as expected etc etc.. I basically clicked EVERYTHING! and moved on!

The file size for the OS flash of windows 10 / 8.1 mobile is a whopping 1.78BG in size. Quite a chew on my data allocation for the month!

windows_recovery_tool_nokia_lumia_windows_10_81_file_size_GB

After about half an hour chewing my expensive mobile data, the download finally finished.

The only nice thing about this is that it stores away these installer files on your C: root drive for later use if you need them, or if the download fails halfway though, saving you time, instead of restarting the whole process again.

When complete, the program switches over to trying to get the windows Nokia Lumia phone to switch to flashing mode so the new OS or reinstall will be accepted.

After spinning away for aeons, my first attempt to reinstall windows mobile on my nokia lumia ended in utter failure, and the program crashed badly not long afterwards, requiring the task manager to put it out of its misery.

On research on the net, a lot of people have problems with a nokia lumia phone switching into flashing mode and it just hangs. In my case, I think the problem was that the phone was running, with its OS active at the time, as indicated by its start screen covering the screen. I think it needs to be in an early boot mode to switch successfully.

On a second attempt however, I rebooted the phone with the power+downvolume hold technique, THEN, quickly plugged in the phone immediately when when the screen showed the NOKIA logo, on a black background.

This met with significantly more success, and the windows mobile flashing operation on the Nokia Lumia phone began working.

On the phone side, the Nokia lumia 930 phone screen turned a disturbing BLOOD red colour, with a progress bar that mirrored what was going on on the computer.

As the progress bar came to the end, the Nokia Lumia Microsoft windows device recovery tool displayed a successful flash had been executed.!

$1 per litre- Cheapest Fuel In Ballarat- Discounted offpeak deal

WP_20170716_18_42_53_ProWe all love a bargain- and ridiculously cheap fuel in Ballarat isn’t easy to come by at all- look for discounted fuel, and often it’s a raw deal, where you have to buy a heap of overpriced groceries to get a few measly cents off the already inflated pump price.

The other night, coming back from grabbing a delicious burger and HSP at I love burgers and Kebabs in Wendouree, I found a genuine deal, with an extremely cheap price.

At the metro Pertroleum, Wendouree, the pump price for regular 91 RON unleaded fuel was a teeny 103.3 cents per litre at metro fuel, Wendouree.  (We dub this place “Indian fuel” because there is always a nice, smiley indian bloke at the counter.

I almost always get fuel here because it’s consistently the cheapest unleaded fuel for my car in Ballarat, and the quality is just fine- never had a problem with my car.

Recently, they replaced the bowsers, and pumps, so if anything, quality and purity shoudl have improved over the last month or s0.

I haven’t seen prices like that since is was a little kid. Must be a price mistake, right? cheapest_fuel_in_ballarat_metro_petroleum_wendouree_indian_fuel_unleaded

I pulled in, and grabbed the hose, and checked the pump price- yep. 103.3 cents per litre for unleaded in Ballarat.

That represents up to a whopping 20% discount off the woollies servo only just up the road.

Filled up 55 litres- $56.81 paid at the counter, no problem. Asked the guy at the counter why so cheap? he said that their distributor, mobil was running an offpeak promotion for a limited time.

Anyway, the discount petrol deal probably wont last long, so get onto it before it vanishes!!
